Sakal News Paper In Pune

Natyaranga Sakal and Sakal Swarvihar have recently hit the newsstands in Maharashtra. These two Marathi quarterlies come close on the heels of the Sakal Group of publications’ national daily, The Sakaal Times, launched on May seven. The publishing house has some months ago launched ‘India and Global Affairs’ targeted at international audience and Tanishq, a Marathi magazine, for elite women in Maharashtra.
The two latest publications are edited by Mr. Sureshchandra Padhye, Daily Sakal’s Editor (Arts and Culture) who is a veteran critic and author.
Natyaranga Sakal has dedicated itself to the artistes and theatre-loving Marathi audience. Its stated mission is to rejuvenate Marathi theatre, which of late has shown a decline in terms of new productions, quality and creativity in dealing with themes. The inaugural issue has traced the history of Marathi Natak, which began in 1853, and has passed through various transitions in pre-independence and post-independence period. Besides the professional and amateur theatre, there are various genres such as Dalit and folk theatre and experimental theatre movement from Mumbai’s Chhabildas of yesteryears to Pune’s Su-darshan. The Natyaranga Sakal has attempted to take a broad overview of the history and contemporary Marathi theatre.
Sakal Swarvihar, on the other hand, is a tribute to the great tradition of music in Maharashtra. With a cover story on vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the issue has articles on maestros like Pandit Jasraj, Gajanan Watve and Dashrath Pujari and about those who accompany vocalists and instrumentalists on the stage.
Both the issues have multi-colour printing of all the 64 pages on art paper.
