Wendell August Forge

The Saturday afternoon blaze turning Grove City and Mercer County historical attractions in the blackened shell, despite the efforts of the many fire departments.

Thick smoke could be seen from a distance after the fire started in Madison Avenue in the workshop historical Wendell August Forge, which makes the metal hand-made gifts.

The call came at 1:35 pm, according to the Mercer County 911 the sender, and dozens of firefighters were still at the scene hours after the shooting, while the smoke continued to come out of the building. There were no injuries.

North Madison Avenue completely closed on Saturday, as well as many of the nearby roads. And the formulation of a car park full of people who live near them, and many expressed their dismay.

Robert McCandless and his son, “said Cody, who were driving home on State Road 173 on Saturday afternoon, and could see the smoke from the fire nearly seven miles.

“We were in the middle distance from the Sandy Lake,” said Cody.

“We can see the gray / beige smoke, and perhaps seven or eight minutes later, when we know the roads Princeton (only a few blocks away from the formation) are beginning to see plumes of black smoke,” said McCandless.

Two of the time they got a little closer, about 2 pm, they saw the roof of the residence, and was engulfed in flames.

Will Knecht, president of the company, which owns the formulation – which was established in 1923 in Brockway, Pennsylvania, and moved to Grove City in 1932 – said they planned to rebuild.

Knecht was optimistic, speaking to reporters in the parking lot while firefighters were working to maintain control of the fire.

“It was a milestone” and said: “It will be a milestone again.”

Knecht, and describing himself as a man of faith, and said he did not always understand the Lord’s plan, but “he knows what to do, and we will rebuild.”

Wendell said in August, other stores will remain open.

Knecht and firefighters said the fire broke something in the workshop, and flames spread through the rest of the building. The clients and staff who will be evacuated.

Grove fire chief Jeff Badger could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
